As the new parliament gets to work, a look at the key things you need to know.
MEPs endorsed Joelle Elvinger from Luxembourg and Stef Blok from the Netherlands for second terms as members of the European Court of Auditors. Moldovan President Maia Sandu addressed MEPs in Strasbourg, focusing on threats to “our democracies”. And the EU’s proposal for new circularity rules was adopted to promote sustainable production and reduce waste in the vehicle sector.
There are two motions of censure against the Commission, tabled by the Greens and the Dutch Democrats. MEPs will vote on these at the beginning of Thursday’s plenary session. In the meantime, MEPs quiz Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during an open debate on the state of the Union, urging her to speed up reforms to tackle organised crime and terrorist attacks in Europe.
In the Commons, MPs question the Chancellor and Defence Secretary in the annual Sir David Amess Summer Adjournment Debate on Gaza, the Chagos Islands, people smuggling, employment figures and rising water bills. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves will also face questions. Committees will examine the Assisted Dying Bill’s Second Reading, and take evidence from Lisa Nandy and Lord Hermer.
Meanwhile, the European Parliament’s Spokesperson and Press Service will host a live last-minute briefing for journalists before Thursday’s plenary session at 16:30. Follow the broadcast on the Interactio app or via the website.
